Spring 2026

Puppet Fabrication & Stop Motion

Work from Victoria Arslani's Spring 2026 Stop Motion class, including my final short film and process breakdown of the puppet fabrication process.

Armature

I am working on one 13 inch puppet, and 2 around 6-7 inch puppets. For the larger one, I used thicker wire, and thinner for the smaller ones. The knurled nuts for the tie downs also vary in size accordingly

Foaming

To build up the body I layered sheets of couch foam coated in liquid latex, then tied it all together with thread.

Heads

For the smaller guys I needed to create a small wire armature so I would be able to move their jaws. I used the thinner steel wire for the bear, and the thicker aluminum wire for the cat. Each head was sculpted with sculpy, and baked. For the girl's head I thought I preferred beads for the eyes, but later changed my mind, so I had to enlist the help of my professor to drill holes into the puppets head...

Hair, Fur, & Clothing

Right now I am working on gluing fur to the bear body, and sewing each of them their little outfits. I still am working on the mouth and eyelid pieces for the little girl in the middle. Hopefully with hair and less of an intense stare she will look less scary!
